Resistance and Capacitance Adjustment for MC Phono Cartridges

1. Resistance Adjustment  
Resistance refers to the electrical resistance that the phono stage or preamp presents to the
MC cartridge output. MC cartridges have very low output impedance
(typically between 1 and 100 Ohms), and optimizing resistance can help minimize signal
loss and improve sound quality.
* Optimal Value: Generally, for MC cartridges, the resistance can vary, but is often
recommended to be between 100 and 1,000 Ohms.
* Sound Impact: Adjusting resistance can affect tonal characteristics.
For instance, too high a resistance can result in a dry and "brittle" sound, while too low a
resistance can provide a richer tone but may lose detail.

2. Capacitance Adjustment
Capacitance refers to the ability to store electrical charge and plays a role in shaping the

the phono stage, and even the turntable itself.
* Optimal Value: For MC cartridges, capacitance is usually set to a low value
(around 100 pF or less), as excessive capacitance can negatively
impact sound performance.
* Sound Impact: Too much capacitance can result in a loss of high frequencies and
create a "muddled" sound. Proper capacitance adjustment can enhance clarity and detail,
allowing for better reproduction of high tones.
